About the event

This spring, Frederick County Homesteaders is digging into something foundational: gut health, food preservation, and reclaiming the old skills that nourished families long before wellness became an industry.
As the frost finally loosens its grip and our gardens begin to wake up, we’re looking ahead to a season filled with local harvests, blooming fields, farm gatherings, and practical skills rooted in the traditions of the Shenandoah Valley. We’re excited to launch our new Gut Health & Fermentation Series — educational classes and hands-on workshops focused on nourishing wellness from the inside out through traditional foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, fresh-milled flour, and sourdough. Simple foods. Powerful benefits. Skills every family can learn at home.
Frederick County Homesteaders Monthly Meeting
Gut Health & Fermentation Series: Sauerkraut Skill Share

Join us for the first class in our new series as we explore one of the simplest and most powerful traditional foods you can make at home: sauerkraut.
During this skill share, you’ll learn the health benefits of preserving the cabbage harvest through fermentation and why sauerkraut has been valued for generations as a living food packed with beneficial probiotics that rival some of the most expensive supplements on the market. Just one teaspoon of sauerkraut contains approximately 3.3 billion CFU of probiotics.
Local homesteader Rhonda Sue Donadieu will share her family’s long-practiced tradition of preserving the harvest and transforming humble cabbage into a holistic, gut-healing superfood. Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn practical fermentation methods, and walk away with the knowledge needed to confidently preserve and store this nourishing staple at home.
We’ll gather together in the People Barn at Simple Gifts Farmstead for an evening of community, learning, and reconnecting with the wisdom of traditional foodways.
